(ANSA) - NEW YORK, JULY 27 - One of the cult films in the history of cinema, 'The Exorcist', is back in cinemas. This is not a remake of the original 1973 version, but a new Universal project that is rather a sequel. The production house has in fact invested at least $ 400 million in a trilogy that will see Ellen Burstyn return to the role of Chris MacNeil, for whom she was nominated for an Oscar as best actress in 1973, along with Leslie Odom Jr (Aaron Burr in Broadway Hamilton's musical) in clothes of the father who goes on his trail after his daughter is possessed.

The release of the first film, directed by David Gordon Green, is scheduled for release in October 2023, while the two will likely follow on Universal's streaming platform, Peacock. In 1973 The Exorcist grossed $ 440 million at the box office and won an Oscar for Best Non-Original Screenplay. The film was directed by William Friedkin from an adaptation that William Peter Blatty made from his book of the same name. Over the years, several prequels and sequels, as well as a TV adaptation in 2016, haven't gotten the same audience response. (HANDLE).
