Oscar winner Ellen Burstyn, 88, slips back into her role from the horror classic "The Exorcist" from 1973: In a new film she will be seen again as actress and mother Chris MacNeil, reports the industry magazine "Variety".
The as yet untitled film should therefore come to US cinemas on October 13, 2023.
It's the first in a new "Exorcist" trilogy to be produced by Blumhouse and Morgan Creek.
In addition to Burstyn, Leslie Odom Jr. ("Hamilton") has already been confirmed as the actor, directed by David Gordon Green.
He is considered a sequel specialist, his latest part in the »Halloween« series will soon celebrate its premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
As »Variety« reports, Universal is said to have paid around 400 million US dollars for the trilogy.
At least some of the films will therefore be shown on the universal streaming service Peacock.
When and where the trilogy will be shown in Germany is not yet known.
For her portrayal of Chris MacNeil, Burstyn was nominated for an Oscar in 1974, but only won the award a year later for her leading role in "Alice Doesn't Live Here".
"The Exorcist" received two Academy Awards for best screenplay and best tone and four Golden Globes.
Three sequels and a television series could not build on the success of the original later.
