Some things you did not know about life in the South Pole (joespinstheglobe)

During the polar winter, the South Pole's atmospheric research station, Amundsen-Scott, is the driest, frozen, and darkest place on earth.

The remote station in Antarctica serves as a center for scientific discoveries in the summer, but from February to October it is maintained by only a few dozen workers, with the team left out of the world.

Two people at the station are trying to break this disconnect - Josia "Joe" Hornman, a medical assistant, and Antoinette "Tony" Traub, a supply and waste technician.

With the help of shaky internet the two used tic-tac-toe to show the world that life at the South Pole in the winter season is not as bleak as one might think.

So true, the South Pole is generally considered a place that is very difficult to live in, especially in the winter season, but in the remote area there are also lots of interesting sights. "It's the driest place on earth," Joe told Insider, "because air can often reach a temperature of minus 56 degrees Celsius. It".

In the ticking account JoeSpinsTheGlobe Joe talked about the pros and cons of living in the South Pole: "It means peeling skin, bloody runny nose. You get an electric current every time you touch the metal," he adds, "but there are also some unexpected benefits in the dry air. Your bath towel dries terribly fast. Mold and mildew do not exist. I have not seen an insect in five days. Animals like penguins and seals can be seen on the coast of Antarctica. But here the conditions are so harsh that apart from microbes like bacteria nothing but us can survive here. "And we also have unlimited chips and popcorn. They do not rot. The staff has a popcorn machine that we use every movie night. I eat so much popcorn here."

Joe says that during the winter, 39 staff members stay at the station, passing the time between the gym and the football field to the music and craft room.

Since they are closed together, they have no choice but to get along with each other.

Tony added that she was surprised by the quick connection she made with her "ice family".

"Thirty-nine strangers were stationed at the station for nine months with nowhere to run to. You create intimacy very quickly," she said.

To ensure that "wars" do not break out at the station during the winter, each of the crew members is required to undergo a background check and a medical history check before receiving permission to join the crew.

"We also had to pass a personality test to see if we could fit in," Tony said, "I always had a positive attitude and extreme optimism, which I think helped me get this amazing opportunity."

In one of his videos, Joe demonstrates the "cold" phenomenon, a climate phenomenon in which the temperature prevailing near the ground is less than 0 degrees Celsius.

He shows how he exhales water vapor from his mouth and explains that people who breathe in a closed space form ice crystals on the walls.

He also demonstrates how he removes the ice crystals in his hands and makes a rather vibrating noise, to ASMR enthusiasts.

In another video Joe discusses the health condition of staff members and explains that as a medical assistant he encourages the use of daylight lamps as well as exercise and healthy eating.

He says that at the base there is access to doctors and psychiatrists, and also a pharmacy that allows people access to medicines.

At the South Pole base there are no religious services, but Joe adds that people can use the places available for that purpose if they just want to.

While some of you may be tempted to live in the South Pole, there is one thing that is likely to nullify any of your positive thoughts in that direction: Joe claims they do not have access to Netflix due to Internet surfing issues.

At this point we would surely be broken.

Besides, anyone who likes to start their morning with a bowl of cereal or is used to enjoying a menu rich in fresh fruit - may also be disappointed here.

During the winter you will not find fresh fruit or milk there.

Indeed, the staff grows vegetables in a greenhouse, such as zucchini and peas, and they have chef meals for which three leading chefs are responsible.

Joe relates: "We have three wonderful chefs who prepare delicious meals every day, and dedicate beyond their duty to upgrade our dining experience."

However, he adds: "Since no flight arrives at the station during the winter, there is a lack of fresh food here. I really miss my fresh milk. I type of milk and cereal in the morning, but the milk powder here is not good enough."

Many were impressed by Joe's informative videos.

One wrote in response after the videos: "This is the most interesting, informative and well-structured ticking account I've come across ... a big fan."

Another wrote: "I loved your content. Most of us will never get to Antarctica so it's interesting to see what we're missing. Thank you!".
