Joey Jordison, a former drummer and founding member of the
American
heavy metal
group Slipknot, died on Monday at the age of 46, his family confirmed to the music magazine
Rolling Stone on
Tuesday
.
A representative of the family has said that the American musician died peacefully in his sleep.
The causes of his death have not yet been specified.
Jordison, born in 1975 in Des Moines (Iowa), was a member of Slipknot since its inception in 1995. He is considered a fundamental piece in the band's first albums such as
Slipknot
(1999) and
Iowa
(2001), from the latter album.

He withdrew from the group he helped found in 2013 due to transverse myelitis, a neurological disease that limited the use of his legs and seriously affected his ability with musical instruments. The drummer, after going through an intense rehabilitation process, was dedicated to a new band called Vimic at the time of his passing. Paul Gray, bassist and another of the founding members of the band, had died in 2010 from a morphine overdose.
"Joey's death has left us with an empty heart and indescribable grief," family members said in a statement sent to
Rolling Stone
in which they affirmed that those who knew Jordison will remember him for "his sharp humor, his kind personality. , his huge heart and his love for everything that had to do with family and music ”.
