The salary of lawyers is impressive: They earn a third more than the average.

A current salary study reveals exactly how much.

"Hard work pays off" - law students among others should claim this for themselves.

Law graduates * start

their job

after their demanding and long studies with an average

gross

salary of

52,300 euros

. They benefit from the

third-highest starting salary of all professional groups in Germany

. That comes from the StepStone salary report 2021. They are only exceeded by medical students and industrial engineers who start their careers with an average of 59,500 euros and 52,800 euros. For comparison: the average entry stop for all graduates is around 45,400 euros.

“To start their careers, lawyers have completed a long and demanding course of study, during which they have acquired special specialist knowledge.

This applies in particular to the legal profession, for which a two-year legal traineeship is required in addition to the two state exams.

This is reflected in the high starting salary, ”explains StepStone salary expert André Schaefer.

Salary of lawyers: an average of 78,000 euros gross per year

But not only the starting salary for legal scholars is attractive, the chance of further salary increases is also very good: During their professional career, lawyers can increase their salary by an average of another 50 percent.

As a result, legal scholars have an above-average salary overall: They earn an

average of 78,000 euros - a good 20,500 euros more than the average

for employees in Germany.

Only doctors are above this with an average salary of around 100,800 euros.

“The above-average salary of lawyers is also an expression of the

great social responsibility

that goes with their profession,” says Schaefer.

Personnel responsibility and area of activity make the difference <br/>

Even if law graduates decide to pursue a career as a lawyer, they will not all earn the same amount.

For example, if you have personnel responsibility, you can look forward to a higher paycheck.

Correspondingly,

attorneys with management functions

earn

almost EUR

20,000 more than those who do not have any personal

responsibility, at almost EUR 92,000

.

The industry also has an impact on pay. “Areas of application for lawyers are diverse and do not end with the classic job in a law firm. More and more

companies are hiring lawyers to

take care of corporate legal matters - for example compliance or contract issues. It can be financially worthwhile. In-house lawyers earn on average more than 10 percent more than the average of employees with a legal background, ”says Schaefer.

Banking lawyers make best money.

Their salary averages around 90,000 euros.

“In particular, factors such as professional experience, personnel responsibility and the industry influence the salary.

That plays a decisive role when looking for a job, ”says Schaefer.
