There has been a violent earthquake off the coast of Alaska.
The US earthquake monitoring station USGS stated the strength as 8.2.
The quake occurred at 10:15 p.m. on Wednesday evening (local time, 8:15 a.m. on Thursday CEST) and at a depth of a good 30 kilometers.
It occurred around a hundred kilometers southeast of the town of Perryville, which is located on a peninsula.
Alaska is located on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates collide.
Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are common in this area.
So far there have been no indications of injuries or significant damage.
Alaska is a very sparsely populated region of the United States.
Tsunami warnings for several regions
The US National Weather Service (NOAA) issued a tsunami warning.
This applies to the southern part of the US state of Alaska, the Alaska Peninsula and the Pacific coast from Hinchinbrook Entrance to Unimak Pass.
A tsunami warning was also issued for the US state of Hawaii and the US Pacific Territory of Guam.
In addition, it will be checked whether there is a tsunami danger for other coastal areas in the USA and Canada.
According to the NHK broadcaster, the authorities in Japan are also discussing whether a tsunami warning is necessary for its territory.
