July 29 is Earth Overshoot Day globally and still anticipates last year.
This year, in fact, the day when the Earth runs out of natural resources foreseen for the whole of 2021, falls on July 29, compared to August 22 last year, which had been postponed due to the pandemic. In 1970, for example, the day fell on December 29th. And therefore the Planet, as has been happening in recent decades, from tomorrow goes on credit on the resources of the following year, showing that it is over-exploiting it. We all live, individuals and communities, as if we had little more than an Earth and a half at our disposal, recalls the US think tank Global Footprint Network. Among the main causes are the increase in the ecological footprint (which calculates how many and what resources each one consumes) and deforestation. According to some estimates, the think tank recalls, to postpone the date,a halving of global carbon emissions would serve to shift Earth Overshoot Day by 93 days, or more than three months.
On the occasion of the Day of the Overexploitation of the Earth, the "100 Days of Possibility" campaign is launched in the USA, given that there are 100 days to go to Cop26, the United Nations conference on climate change to be held in Glasgow from 31 October to 12 November next .
