Traffic between two lines again (partially) authorized for two-wheelers

The circulation of motorized two-wheelers between two queues, totally prohibited since the end of January, will again be tested and extended by

After having been banned on February 1 and made many motorcyclists and two-wheeler drivers react, the experimentation of interfile circulation for two-wheelers is back in a decree published this Friday in the Official Journal.

The Île-de-France, Bouches-du-Rhône, Haute-Garonne, Gironde, Hérault, Isère, Loire-Atlantique, North, Rhône, Var will be affected by this new experiment. , the Alpes-Maritimes, the Drôme, the Vaucluse, the Pyrénées-Orientales and the metropolis of Lyon.

The goal, indicated by the Interministerial Delegate for Road Safety, Marie Gautier-Melleray, is "to try to find ways to make this practice safer for two-wheelers and all other road users" while the previous experiment, lasting five years, had yielded inconclusive results.

According to the report carried out by Cerema (Center for Studies and Expertise on Risks, the Environment, Mobility and Planning), the accident of motorized two-wheelers on certain roads in the 11 departments where the measure was experienced, had thus increased by 12%.

On the contrary, it had fallen by 10% on other roads, still in the same departments.

But Road Safety considered the statistical data too few and far between to be really conclusive, which pushed it to widen the perimeter.

Speed limited to 30 km / h in traffic jams

"We have also noted a definite improvement in behavior and better social acceptability as the experiment progresses", underlines Ms. Gautier-Melleray to justify the new phase of the experiment. But while previously two-wheelers could travel between the two leftmost lanes at a maximum of 50 km / h regardless of the speed of other vehicles, they will now not be able to travel more than 30 km / h faster than those- ci (within a limit of 50 km / h maximum). For example, if the traffic is completely stopped, their speed will be limited to 30 km / h (40 km / h if the speed is 10 km / h, etc.).

In addition, specific signage will be put in place from the fall on the roads concerned, recalling certain rules.

It will be supported by a communication campaign, in particular in the local press, on social networks and aimed at driving schools and motorbike schools.

Finally, users of Waze and ViaMichelin GPS navigation systems will be warned that they are traveling on a road where interfile traffic (CIF) is experienced.

The experiment, for which Road Safety has met the biker federations “on three occasions”, will be the subject of a “more complete provisional and terminal annual evaluation” than the previous one, specifies Ms. Gautier-Melleray.
