The German identity card is getting some changes.

In particular, the security of the identity document is to be increased.

We explain what's new.

Berlin - From the age of 16, ID is required in Germany.

This means that an identification document must always be carried with you so that you can clearly identify yourself at all times.

The German identity card is particularly practical for this because, unlike a passport, it fits in every wallet.

From August 2, 2021, however, a new identity card will be available.

But what exactly is changing?

New identity card: fingerprints mandatory

Citizens who apply for a new identity card from August 2, 2021, must now submit two fingerprints in addition to the biometric photo.

These are saved in the ID card's chip.

This is to make identification more secure.

The Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI) explains: "If there are any doubts about the identity of the person after comparing the photo on the identity card with the person, the security authorities of the EU member states can read out the fingerprints stored in the chip and compare them with the fingerprints of the person identifying.

This means that attempts at fraud are quickly identified. "

In addition, the new ID card has a new security feature: a version number.

In future, this will be found on the back of the ID card.

As the BMI explains, the authenticity of the identity card can be more easily and reliably checked using the new security feature.

From August 2nd;

Identity card gets a new look

In addition to the technical changes, the Perso is also getting a new look.

The writing in the upper area of the front is no longer black, but will be blue in future.

In addition, the EU flag will adorn the upper left corner of the ID card from August 2nd.

The German country code can be seen in the flag.

The changes to the identity card were decided in the course of the law to strengthen security in passport, ID and immigration law document systems, which was passed in November 2020.

However, this is not the only change that consumers will face in August.

From August 1st, new rules will apply in hardware stores.
