(ANSA) - SANTIAGO DEL CHILE, 01 AUG - The workers of the largest copper mine in the world, Escondida, in Chile, have decided to go on strike, believing that their wage demands have not been sufficiently taken into consideration by the Anglo-Australian group Bhp Billiton that manages the plant.
After a consultation among the employees, the union that represents it declared in a statement that the strike had 2,164 votes in favor, against 11 for the acceptance of the last offer of the owners.
It is feared that the strike will lead to price increases that are already sailing not far from the peak of $ 10,740,000 tonnes reached on 13 May.
With 1.2 million tons produced last year, Escondida is the largest copper mine in the world.
