A 49-year-old who died on Sunday during the Corona protests in Berlin apparently died of a heart attack.

As SPIEGEL learned from investigative circles, the man from the Euskirchen district in the Rhineland is said to have tried to break a police chain in the Kreuzberg district around 4.20 p.m.

According to the preliminary investigations, the Rhinelander knocked an officer to the ground in the Tempelhofer Ufer area and went down with the police officer.

The policeman was injured.

After the emergency services tried to arrest the 49-year-old, he initially fled.

After a brief persecution, he was brought to the ground and handcuffed.

The man initially complained of shoulder pain, but then stated that it had subsided, it said.

He was then taken in a police van to a prisoner collection point on Hiroshimastraße in the Tiergarten district, where his identity was to be determined.

Here the 49-year-old complained about pain, including in his chest, and asked for a doctor.

A little later, according to the information, an ambulance and an emergency doctor vehicle arrived at 6:23 p.m. at the latest, while extensive resuscitation measures were already in progress.

The injured was admitted to the Charité and taken to an intensive care unit.

There he died after unsuccessful rescue attempts.

According to the preliminary results of an autopsy ordered immediately, the 49-year-old died of a heart attack.

In addition to injuries caused by the resuscitation attempts, according to the preliminary autopsy result, no traces of severe violence were found.

The exact circumstances of the death of the Rhinelander, who had taken part in the protests with a young son, are now to be clarified by a public prosecutor's investigation.

As the Corona protest party "Die Basis" announced, the deceased was a founding member of the small party.

Almost 600 arrests

Despite the ban on several demonstrations, including those from the "lateral thinker" scene, thousands of people took to the streets in Berlin on Sunday.

There were several clashes between protesters and the police.

Emergency services and union officials were also attacked.

According to the police, there have been almost 600 arrests.

She spoke of around 5000 participants in the protests.

The federal government reacted to the riots with concern.

There were also "attacks on people from the protest events," said the deputy government spokeswoman Ulrike Demmer on Monday in Berlin.

"The Federal Government is very concerned about this." There is just as little space for violence and provocation as "for right-wing extremist ideas, for conspiracy myths, regardless of which side they come from," said Demmer.
