In order to do justice to new educational biographies, older students should also receive Bafög, says Education Minister Karliczek. In addition, the funding should no longer be automatically linked to the standard period of study.

There are many people who do not follow the traditional educational path and attend a university and technical college immediately after graduating from high school.

Some of them only acquire university entrance qualifications on their second educational path.

But many of them are already too old to receive state training grants - the Bafög - for their studies.

Federal Education Minister Anja Karliczek would like to change that.

"We need a further development of the student loan in the new electoral period," says the CDU politician of the "Augsburger Allgemeine".

As examples of her reform ideas, Karliczek cited moving back the Bafög age limit for students.

"We also want to do more for people who want to study later in life, even if they are older than 35, for example."

The Bafög must map the new educational biographies better than before, which are no longer as uniform as they used to be.

The funding should no longer automatically expire with the standard period of study.

The CDU politician also spoke out in favor of the state having to support a second education financially.

During the corona pandemic, the federal government not only supported students financially with student loans, but also with bridging aid.

Affected people could receive up to 500 euros a month as a subsidy if it can be proven that they lost their part-time job and got into financial difficulties.

According to Karliczek, the federal government helped more than 100,000 students with 172 million euros.

However, the federal government does not yet know how the extension of the standard study period due to Corona will affect students' needs for student loans.

All federal states had extended the standard study times at their universities as a result of the corona crisis.

Because the Bafög entitlement is linked to the standard period of study, the right to the state financial injection for studying for the students concerned was extended by up to three semesters.
