A former judge at the Augsburg Regional Court has been fined for possession of child pornography.
The 59-year-old obtained some of the more than 4,000 files with images of abuse from criminal files, said Chief Public Prosecutor Thomas Goger from the Central Office for Cybercrime Bavaria at the Public Prosecutor's Office in Bamberg.
A penalty order from the Augsburg District Court is now final and the man has a criminal record.
The investigation against the ex-judge was triggered by indications from abroad that the man was registered on a darknet platform for child pornographic material in 2019.
During a search in June 2020, the investigators then found extensive evidence.
At the time of the conviction in early July, the 59-year-old was no longer working as a judge.
He had asked for his release from the judge's office.
The man made a confession and accepted the order of punishment from the Augsburg District Court.
He thus escaped a public hearing.
