In the Bremen district of Vahr, a man died in police custody on Sunday for reasons that have not yet been clarified.
The 35-year-old was arrested with two other men when he was about to break into a cigarette machine.
The police announced this on Monday.
The two 25 and 37-year-old accomplices were apparently under the influence of drugs and were taken to a clinic, it said.
The 35-year-old did not show any signs of failure and stayed in the presidium.
When he was about to be taken to a judge on Sunday evening, the man was found lifeless in the cell.
First aid and resuscitation were unsuccessful, the police said.
No evidence of misconduct
The prosecutor is now investigating the cause of death.
The department for internal investigations at the interior authority has initiated an examination of the measures, it said.
So far, there have been no indications of third-party negligence or misconduct by.
The three alleged perpetrators, all without a permanent residence in Germany, were found by a doctor from the Institute for Forensic Medicine to be arrestable and transportable.
The public prosecutor ordered the continuation of the custodial measures for the purpose of a detention check because of the risk of escape.
According to their own statements, the police discovered a car near the crime scene, containing a sack with around 250 packs of cigarettes and the alleged tools to break into it.
The find was confiscated.
