US singer Billie Eilish uses the most varied vocabulary of all modern pop stars in her songs. This was the result of an evaluation of the word search engine »Wordtips«, a few days after the release of the new album »Happier Than Ever«. The 100 most popular "modern" stars were compared. In addition, 100 singer “legends” - the basis for this was the list of the 100 “greatest singers of all time” published by “Rolling Stone” magazine. For the evaluation, WordTips counted how many different words the artists used in total in their songs and calculated the average value from this.
Among the modern stars, Billie Eilish won with 169 words per 1000. The pop singer was well behind the "legend" Patti Smith: The rock singer landed in first place with a score of 217. In addition to her music career, Smith has been writing poetry and stories for several decades, and in 2020 published her book "In the Year of the Monkey". The musicians Joni Mitchell (199) and Björk (197) as well as the modern stars Harry Styles (159) and Lizzo (153) were among the front runners. According to the evaluation, Bob Dylan has the largest vocabulary overall: He used 12,285 words in his entire career.
Other stars like Justin Bieber (80) and Rihanna (87), on the other hand, only came into the lower midfield.
Soul musician Luther Vandross and rapper Trey Songz were each given a score of 66 for the smallest vocabulary: Trey Songz became known for songs like "Na na" or "Back Home", among other things.
