Limit values exceeded: This is PAH4 and benzo (a) pyrene

The most common reasons for recalls in the food sector are usually microbiological contamination or foreign objects such as broken glass.

Exceeding maximum values is comparatively rare.

In the case of the Powerstar Food product, the company determined that the maximum content of Benz (a) pyrene and “Sum of PAH4” was exceeded.

The Federal Office for Consumer Protection announced on Friday.

PAHs are so-called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons that can be found in cosmetics and food.

They arise, among other things, from the incomplete burning of wood, coal or tobacco.

Benz (a) pyrene is a sub-form of PAH and is usually found primarily in car and industrial exhaust gases, but it is also found in the soil and thus also in vegetables and grains.

Benz (a) pyrene is considered harmful and carcinogenic. The Stiftung Warentest found PAK in the past in investigations in olive oils, gourmet oils, tomatoes soaked in oil, green and black tea. According to the Federal Office, the chemical compounds should not be found in food due to their potentially toxic properties, according to a statement from the

German Press Agency

. The manufacturer Powerstar did not initially disclose how the contamination of the dietary supplement came about. (
