In Cologne, the police caught a suspected looter from a flood area.
On Monday, the officers checked a 32-year-old driver whose clothes were "completely muddy," the police said.
In the trunk of the rental car, the Bulgarian citizen had bags and a suitcase with tools and clothing, the origin of which he gave contradicting information.
There was also a hand grenade in the glove compartment.
The bags and the suitcase were confiscated.
According to the information, a breath alcohol test on the man showed around one per thousand, and a drug pre-test was also positive.
After initial investigations, the 32-year-old, who was already known to the police for theft, came from an area affected by the flood.
Criminal investigations have been started against him.
Because of the ammunition found, the site in the Mülheim district was initially closed to traffic.
An examination of the suspected explosive device showed, however, that it was simply a no longer functional training hand grenade from the 1970s.
