Fires in Turkey: nine outbreaks still active, fanned by the wind

2021-08-03T13:33:51.908Z

In six days, 136,000 hectares went up in smoke, three times the area burned on average over an entire year.

A blaze that nothing seems to be able to stop.

The fires that have been raging since last Wednesday in Turkey are approaching a thermal power station in Milas, in the south of the country, on Tuesday.

“If we cannot stop the fire by an aerial intervention (…), it will move towards the thermal power station.

The situation is very serious, ”the mayor of Milas (south) Muhammet Tokat was alarmed on Monday evening in a video he shared on Twitter.

This Tuesday morning, the fire was still not controlled and exceeded, according to Mr. Tokat, "the critical point".

The city has about twenty archaeological sites, which the flames threaten.

The councilor continues to post images on his Twitter account, claiming that the fire is not under control as some claim.

For several days he has been calling for a water bomber to be directed towards Milas, in vain.

Uyarıyoruz;

Because Turkey has suffered the worst fires for at least a decade, which ravage forests and agricultural lands, as well as inhabited and tourist areas on the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts.

136,000 ha went up in smoke, three times the area burned on average over an entire year, which confirms data from the European Forest Fire Information Service.

4000 firefighters deployed

Of the 156 fires that broke out in a week across the country, nine are still active, fueled by temperatures above 40 ° C, strong winds and low humidity, said Forestry Minister Bekir Pakdemirli.

He blames the drought and the hot weather, almost ten degrees above the seasonal average.

On July 20, Turkey recorded its highest temperature ever in the southeast, at 49.1 ° C.

Turkey: farmers try to save their animals from fires ravaging the country

More than 4,000 firefighters are deployed, as well as 16 planes and 51 helicopters.

Residents are forced to mobilize, some have carried cans of water to a hill near Marmaris, criticizing the government for not doing enough.

“We are here like the whole village, from the inhabitants to the others.

We haven't fled or anything so the government needs to see that and not run away either.

He has to send some of his planes here, ”a woman named Gulhan told Reuters.

An AFP team in the Aegean city saw farmers pulling their animals from their burning barns and moving them to a beach to bring them to safety.

Frightened tourists and villagers were evacuated by boat as high winds and heat spread the flames.

"Please trust the statements of the official authorities"

The European Union sent three water bomber planes, two from Spain and one from Croatia, to help Turkey fight the fires.

Russia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Iran are also helping.

Over the weekend, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and other government ministers visited the destroyed sites to assure residents of the state's solidarity and support the families of the eight who died. "We will continue to take all necessary measures to heal the wounds of our country, make up for its losses and improve its opportunities," Erdogan said, pledging that the government would provide financial support to those affected. But the president and his team remain very criticized for their action, and the weakening, year after year, of the fleet of Canadairs.

- Fahrettin Altun (@fahrettinaltun) August 1, 2021

Erdogan's communications director Fahrettin Altun has dismissed the criticism and condemned a social media campaign calling for foreign aid.

“Our Turkey is strong.

Our state is standing, ”he said on Twitter, calling most of the information about the fires released as“ fake news ”.

"Please trust the statements of the official authorities."
