So far it is still unclear how the accident came about: After the explosion of a car in Hürth in North Rhine-Westphalia, a 55-year-old died from his injuries, the police said.
The car exploded on Monday and then went up in flames.
The police are now investigating how the fire came about.
The Cologne public prosecutor's office was also informed.
The 55-year-old suffered severe burns and was flown to a hospital by rescue helicopter.
A helper was also injured when he came to the aid of the driver.
Emergency chaplains had to take care of passers-by who had seen what was happening.
