We all know the shape of the boot of Italy, but have you ever stopped to think what sits at the end of the boot? The answer - Italy is completely different, with its own character and culture, a spectacular big city, picturesque towns, impressive coastlines, fascinating history, culture, food and more. Or in one word: Sicily.

Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean. How large? A little more than the surface of the entire State of Israel. Therefore, it is a destination in itself for a trip and as they say "until you saw Sicily, you did not really know Italy".

For many, Sicily is synonymous with "Godfather" movies and Mafia origins, but an organized trip around the island, with an experienced and skilled guide, who knows how to take you to all the places not to be missed, told, expanded and explained, will reveal Italy you really did not know. So let's make you a little more eager, with five must-visit places on a trip to Sicily.

Syracuse

In ancient times, in the days of Greater Greece and the Roman Republic, Syracuse (then called Syracuse) was the most important city in Sicily.

It is located in the southeast of the island, on the shoreline and from it came Archimedes, one of the most important scientists in human history.

In the third century BCE and after many wars, Syracuse turned its back on Rome, which in response conquered and burned it.

Sicilians insist that this is why today, more than 2,000 years after Rome refused to build a bridge connecting the island to the rest of the country, although the distance is about three miles away.

Syracuse awaits you beautiful archaeological park with the name Neapolis, Cave "ear of Dionysus In the old city stands the cathedral square built in the seventh century AD with a temple to the goddess Athena and after the Greek theater and the Roman amphitheater, you can continue to wander the charming alleys of the city.

Taormina

About 120 km north of Syracuse, after passing through the large city of Catania, you reach the picturesque Taormina, the pearl of Sicily. It was built on a cliff and may remind many of landscapes we are used to seeing from Tuscany, but it has its own character. gates impressive and it has Greek Theater giant should stop him, clock tower beautiful and the gardens Trbilian, but a visit to Taormina would not be complete without a brief foray Mount Etna.

The volcano enormous (over 3,000 meters) is still active and its environs can see lava rocks. Allow See it well from Taormina, but it is also worth approaching and sniffing in the villages that lie at its foot.

Palermo

The capital of Sicily is the fifth most populous city in Italy, with no less than 1.2 million inhabitants living in its vicinity.

It is also a gateway to the whole island and of course, full of attractions and points of interest, starting with the "City of the Dead", where more than 8,000 mummified mummies are buried underground, the largest concentration in the world and through the medieval royal palace.

Back in Palermo, there is the Massimo Theater, one of the largest in all of Europe.

You can visit it even if there is no performance, but of course if you managed to catch one, you won.

In the city you will also find the impressive Pretoria Fountain, great beaches and food markets (try mostly the vouchers, and you will not regret it) and a Jewish quarter, which provides a hint of the community that lives there.

Stromboli

If the transition from "normal" Italy to Sicily was not enough for you, you should warmly (literally) visit the vicinity of another volcano, on the island of Stromboli.

It is one of the Aeolian Islands and its nickname is "The Lighthouse of the Mediterranean", as it often erupts.

Despite this, Stromboli Island still has about 500 residents, whose challenge was presented in a masterpiece from the 1950s by the great Italian director Roberto Rossolini, while his future partner (the relationship between them was born following the filming), the big star Ingrid Bergman, stars.

The "Mount of Shear", to which Frodo throws the ring of flesh of the rings (sorry for the spoiler ...) was also inspired by Stromboli and so is the climactic moment of "Journey to the Belly of the Earth", Jules Verne's famous book.

In short, the tiny island is a recommended destination, which will leave you with lots of memorable stories and plays.

Cephalo

For dessert, east of Palermo lies the wonderful commune of Chaplo, which in recent years has become the best resort and nightlife area in Sicily known to many.

The whole town overlooks a huge rock that penetrates deep into the Mediterranean waters and beyond the various pastimes and fun walks in the alleys and streets of the city, where you will find souvenirs and great food, you should also take a look at the impressive local cathedral, many scattered churches and the old town.
