(ANSA) - ROME, AUGUST 03 - Neutralizing antibodies present in the blood can predict the risk of becoming infected with SARS-Cov-2 after being vaccinated and can be a reliable predictive marker for assessing the need for a third dose to protect against emerging variants.

This is demonstrated by a study based on data from nearly 11,500 healthcare workers in Israel, published in the New England Journal of medicine.

Among health workers, 39 workers were identified who had been infected with SARS-CoV-2 despite being fully vaccinated with double doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, leading to so-called "breakthroughinfection". All had mild symptoms or none. For 22 of the 39 workers, the authors were able to obtain antibody measurements taken on the day the infections were detected or in the previous week. Researchers also looked at data from 104 fully vaccinated workers who were not infected despite having been in contact with the virus. The comparison showed that the levels of neutralizing antibodies were lower among those who were infected, providing the first direct evidence of this effect. The findings reinforce previous data collected during clinical trials of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine relating to a link between higher levels of neutralizing antibodies and a lower likelihood of infection. The study "is an important step in further validating the use of the titer of neutralizing antibodies directed against the virus as a related element of protection," says Miles Davenport, immunologist at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia.
