Danger - there is lead in the coffee (story system checked)

If there is one lesson that the Tokyo Olympics constantly teaches us, it is the fact that champions also have very bad days and that sometimes they arrive at the most unsuccessful timing possible - such as the Olympics where they trained for almost five years.

Dutch runner (of Ethiopian descent) Sipan Hassan had such a day this week, when at a critical moment she stumbled on the running track at the early end of the 1,500-meter run.

But she still managed to end this day with an Olympic gold medal around her neck, and for this amazing makeover she thanks for the coffee.

A few hours after she stumbled on the track, Hassan competed in another run - 5,000 meters, and crossed the finish line first in an impressive sprint.

"I used all my energy in the morning and was a little tired. I felt awful when I fell. I thought I would not be an Olympic champion anymore. It was an amazing day. When I fell and got up I used so much energy. I couldn't believe the feelings I had in my legs. All the energy just left me." Before the final, I no longer cared, "she admitted.

"I was so tired. Without coffee, I would never have become an Olympic champion. I needed all the caffeine possible. I was so scared I couldn't do it."

Those of us who wanted fate and did not become Olympic athletes (or at all) used to drinking coffee in the morning, because caffeine has stimulating and stimulating properties that help us shake off sleep and start the day more alert.

But can coffee have a similar effect on physical and athletic performance as well?

What do the studies say?

"Caffeine is one of the most researched substances in terms of influencing athletic performance and there is ample evidence that it helps athletes reach higher levels and train for longer periods of time and at higher intensity," says Dr Neil Clark, a sports science specialist at the University of Coventry. "This is why professional athletes as well as amateur trainees in a wide range of activities use it as a kind of 'natural' performance enhancer, '" he explained

. Precisely the evidence regarding the effect of caffeine on sprint runs is less unequivocal, says Dr. Clark: "There is evidence for some improvement and limited performance in runs lasting up to 3 minutes. However in short runs lasting around 10 seconds caffeine can improve explosive power, speed and strength. ".

What is the most beneficial way to consume caffeine?

Most studies focus on the effects of caffeine consumed in capsules, rather than drinking a cup of coffee as most of us are used to.

The reason is that it is more complex to scientifically measure the effect of caffeine when the level of caffeine can vary greatly from one cup of coffee to another.

But there are also studies that have specifically examined the effect of drinking coffee on performance in sports such as cycling and competitive running and have shown that it may serve as an alternative to caffeine capsules and produce an effect similar to that of pure caffeine consumption.

"In fact, drinking coffee may be even slightly more effective than caffeine alone in improving endurance activities," says Dr. Clark.

Everyone reacts differently to caffeine.

What are the disadvantages of caffeine as a performance enhancer?

As with any nutritional study, there are a number of possible disadvantages and complications that need to be considered.

"Humans differ in their response to caffeine or coffee consumption," explains Dr. Neil Schwartz, an expert in sports science at the University of Alabama in the United States.

"In people with good tolerance, coffee can improve both physical and mental performance.

The physiological response of each of us to coffee lies in genetics, but also in our habits - how much coffee do we tend to consume? In addition, there are less good effects attributed to caffeine consumption, such as amplification. Of anxiety levels and sleep disturbance - two factors that can indirectly but significantly affect athletic performance.
