One product performed particularly poorly in a large eco-test of sunflower oils.

The reasons for this as well as good alternatives.

Frankfurt am Main - The consumer magazine “Öko-Test” takes a closer look at 21 sunflower oils - with sometimes terrifying results.

In general, it turns out that all oils are contaminated with mineral oil.

Saturated mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOSH) are detected in all products tested.

These accumulate in organs such as the liver.

However, it is still unclear how these mineral oil hydrocarbons affect health.

Basically, "Öko-Test" is of the opinion that these simply do not belong in food.

That is why the consumer magazine also calls for strict controls on the part of manufacturers.

Öko-Test delivers terrifying results: two sunflower oils contain carcinogenic substances

Two products performed particularly poorly in the test.

These are pure sunflower oil from Thomy (Nestlé) and sunflower oil from Penny.

The values for both products are "greatly increased".

The consumer magazine rated a total of five sunflower oils as “poor” or “unsatisfactory”.

Sunflower oils are available from many suppliers.

But which are really convincing and which are mercilessly punished?

The laboratory commissioned by “Öko-Test” was able to detect potentially carcinogenic substances in two sunflower oils.

These are the "Gut Organic Sunflower Oil, native cold-pressed" from Aldi Süd and the "Sunflower Oil, cold-pressed" from Denree.

Both products are rated “poor”.

Sunflower oil: Extreme differences - between harmless and possible health hazards

Nine sunflower oils could be consumed safely.

These include, for example, "Rewe organic sunflower oil native" and "Alnatura sunflower oil native".

The “Bio Planète sunflower oil nativ classic” can boast of being the test winner.

According to

RTL

, only very small amounts of mineral oil were found in this oil from a French cultivation prayer in the laboratory.

In contrast, there is evidence of the carcinogenic substance benzo (a) pyrene in two native sunflower oils investigated.

This substance is one of the so-called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), which in turn are absorbed through food, the respiratory tract or the skin.

These substances get into food through smoke or exhaust gases.

The assumption in this specific case: when the sunflower seeds were dried before they were pressed, the transfer took place.

Sunflower oil contains mold toxin: the lack of EU guidelines is to blame

The following statement reads just as ugly: the organic sunflower oil from dm ("organic sunflower oil cold-pressed, Naturland") even contains the mold toxin alternariol monomethyl ether (AME).

This has been proven to damage the genetic make-up.

The big problem: to date there is no legal limit for the mold toxin.

That is why “Öko-Test” based its assessment of the corresponding sunflower oil on an initial proposal by the EU Commission with regard to a guideline value.

The result;

the organic sunflower oil from dm fails.

So far, nothing is known of a recall or the like.
