(ANSA-AFP) - ATHENS, AUGUST 05 - Faced with an increase in coronavirus infections, Greece has decided to impose a curfew and various restrictions, from tomorrow and for at least one week, on the island of Zakynthos and Chania, in Crete. The authorities announced it.

The two tourist resorts will have to impose a curfew between one and six at night, like the one put in place on the island of Mykonos in July, in addition to the total ban on music in bars, restaurants and discos. Gatherings of more than 20 people are also prohibited. Organizers of private gatherings ;; face a fine of up to 200,000 euros.

These new restrictions were recommended by a panel of health experts from the country, after the increase in coronavirus cases on the two islands in recent days. These two destinations, which are very popular during the tourist season, present the risk of a surge in infections.

The health situation in Greece continues to deteriorate mainly due to the spread of the Delta variant.

Currently, 192 people are in intensive care in hospitals across the country. The total number of cases has reached 503,885 with over 13,000 deaths. (ANSA-AFP).
