(ANSA) - SYDNEY, 05 AUG - The sixth lockdown in Melbourne (Victoria) begins in a few hours since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, while Sydney (New South Wales) records yet another record of daily cases: thus the fight against Covid in Australia continues , where from 8pm local time (noon in Italy) overall more than half of its 25 million inhabitants will be in solitary confinement.

Victoria's premier, Dan Andrews, explained that he had "no choice" but to impose the lockdown, which this time affects the entire state, not just the capital. Meanwhile, 262 cases of contagion have been detected in New South Wales in the past 24 hours, the highest level ever recorded.

Much of these cases, the health authorities have made local, are concentrated in the state capital - Sydney - but some outbreaks that have recently emerged in other districts have prompted state premier Gladys Berejiklian to expand the restrictive measures also to areas adjacent to the metropolis.

Also in the last 24 hours, Sydney has recorded five deaths: all people between 60 and 80 years of age and not vaccinated.

"I can't stress enough how important it is for everyone, regardless of age, to come forward and get the vaccine," said Berejiklian.

So far only 20% of the Australian population has been fully vaccinated due to delays in supplies, but also due to the hesitation of citizens.
