(ANSA) - ATHENS, AUG 06 - A 38-year-old man died in Athens after being hit by a collapsed electricity pole during the devastating fires that are hitting the north of the Greek capital.
This was announced by the Hellenic Ministry of Health.
She is the first victim of this wave of fires that has been sweeping through Greece for days, favored by temperaturetorride.
In Greece, 16 people, slightly burned and with respiratory problems, were hospitalized between yesterday and today following the violent fires that have raged in various areas of the country for days and that have reached the gates of Athens. "A dozen people have been hospitalized with respiratory problems in the clinic of Histia on the island of Euboea, including two fire watches," said the Greek Minister of Health, Vassilis Kikilias. Another firefighter and five residents were also hospitalized last night following light burns reported in fires that hit some villages in northern Athens.
"Our country is facing an extremely critical situation," Greek Prime Minister KyriakosMitsotakis said last night. The fire has been burning Greece for a week now, also due to the extreme temperatures recorded in these days. In addition to the wooded areas and villages on the Euboea island about 200km east of Athens, it is above all the village of Afidnes that was hit by the most violent fires last night, near Mount Parnitha just 30 kilometers from Athens.
