Cigarette smoking is known as one of the most harmful things you can do to your health and that of your relatives, but can the harm to your environment be compared to smoking cannabis?

According to a new study published in the journal Pediatric Research, children whose parents smoke cannabis appear to be more prone to respiratory diseases, such as colds or bronchiolitis.

After examining nearly 1,500 parents at a children’s hospital in Colorado, the study authors concluded that such infections appear to occur more frequently among children who are routinely exposed to secondhand smoke from cannabis.

Of the parents who participated in this specific study, 5.2 percent said they smoked or used a cannabis vaporizer, 5.4 percent reported smoking smoked cannabis and tobacco, and 14.3 percent smoked only tobacco.

Of those who consumed cannabis, 95 percent were classified as regular users, meaning we smoked at least once a week.

Those who said they used cannabis - whether alone or in combination with tobacco - reported a higher incidence of respiratory viral infections in their children, with these children suffering an average of 1.31 infections such as colds or other similar diseases per year.

In contrast, children whose parents do not consume cannabis or tobacco experienced only 1.04 infections per year.

It is interesting to note that children whose parents smoked only tobacco did not suffer more from respiratory infections (1.0 infections per year) than those whose parents claimed they did not smoke at all.

However, tobacco smoke was associated with a greater number of visits to the emergency room, while this was not the case with passive cannabis smoking.

It also appears that children of parents of cannabis smokers have not suffered from other conditions known to be associated with passive cigarette smoking, such as ear infections or asthma attacks.

"The negative impact that passive cigarette smoking can have on children's health has been extensively studied but the effect of passive marijuana smoking on young children is unclear," study author Adam Johnson explained in a statement.

"Our findings identify the potential for increased respiratory tract infections in children who have been passively exposed to marijuana smoke."

However, as the researchers note, these observations do not prove a causal link between passive cannabis smoking and respiratory infections, which means more research is needed before concrete conclusions can be drawn.

Moreover, their decision to include vaporizers as a passive source of smoking is controversial to some extent, and this is because they do not produce actual smoke.

However, studies have indicated levels of THC - the main psychoactive ingredient in cannabis - that can be detected in the air after using the vaporizer, so the authors chose to include this form of smoking in their study.

Despite this, they admit that their results "might have been slightly different if we had separated therapists who indicated evaporation as their method of choice."
