It's a photo that should delight the British.

The six-year-old Princess Charlotte gazes intently at a butterfly, which she holds in both hands.

An admiral butterfly.

On Saturday, Charlotte's parents, Prince William and Duchess Kate, published the motif via Instagram and Twitter.

And combined it with a message to their own compatriots.

The people should take part in an action that runs until Sunday: the large counting of butterflies.

It had started on July 16.

Participants can use the app to report when they see butterflies.

The royal couple emphasized in a comment that butterflies are not just beautiful creatures.

"Butterflies are vital parts of the ecosystem - as pollinators and as parts of the food chain." It is hoped that their numbers have increased compared to the previous year.

In addition, the couple spread the catchphrase »savebutterflies« - »Save butterflies«.

Environmentalists fear, however, that the weather could have had a negative impact on stocks.

A warm April was followed by a cold snap in May.

Butterflies don't like that.
