A ketogenic diet is considered very fashionable at the moment, but new research warns that it can be detrimental to health over time.

Researchers say that what makes the high-fat diet different from other weight loss strategies also increases the risk of developing a large number of different diseases, including heart disease, cancer, diabetes and even Alzheimer's disease.

"The typical ketogenic diet is a disease-promoting disaster," said lead study author Lee Crosby, a clinical dietitian and director of the Nutrition Education Program at the Physicians' Medical Committee in charge. .

Crosby - and with him a team from Grossman Medical School in New York, Bellevue Hospital, the University of Pennsylvania, Loma Linda University and George Washington University School of Medicine - performed what scientists call "the most comprehensive review of categorical diets to date."

Their findings appear in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition.

A ketogenic diet usually refers to any weight loss program that is very low in carbohydrates, increases protein intake and is high in fat.

Why would anyone think this is a healthy diet you ask?

Well, actually there's a scientific reason for that.

Ketogenic diets are popular because this mix of foods tries to induce ketosis in the body.

This process activates the production of ketones, which are an alternative energy source for the body.

What makes ketones so attractive is the fact that neurons and other cells can process this energy better than fatty acids.

However, the new review finds that the foods that ketogenic diets use to achieve this may help in the short term for weight loss, but may harm the body over time.

Among their findings, the study authors argue that the Catalan diet appears to be particularly dangerous for pregnant women and those hoping to have children.

The study found that a low-carbohydrate diet was associated with a higher risk of malformations in the baby's nerve canals.

This increased risk remains even if the mother takes folic acid during pregnancy.

Protein-rich keto diets can also speed up the rate of kidney failure in patients with kidney disease.

Researchers add that diet raises the levels of "bad cholesterol".

Causes cancer?

The team notes that keto diets are often seen as a potential cure for heart disease and even cancer.

However, while some studies show that a ketogenic diet can starve cancer cells, the new report finds that restricting carbohydrates actually slows a person’s diet toward foods that cause cancer.

"In addition to the significant risks for kidney disease patients and pregnant women, keto diets are dangerous for others as well, as this diet can raise LDL cholesterol levels and may increase the overall risk of chronic diseases," Crosby explains, "while keto can reduce body weight in the short term, this approach It is not more effective than other weight loss diets.
