Beer production in Italy almost halved in 2020 with -46% compared to 2019. Eurostat makes the survey with a sector analysis. According to the market study of the statistical office of the European Union, the production of beer containing alcohol in the EU amounted to almost 32 billion liters last year. The research also shows that in 2020 EU Member States produced 1.4 billion liters of beer that contained less than 0.5% alcohol or had no alcohol content at all.
Compared to 2019, EU production of alcohol-containing beer decreased by 8%, while non-alcoholic beer production remained stable. In 2020, the EU's total beer production was around 74 liters per inhabitant. Germany is the first producer in 2020 with 7.5 billion liters (24% of the total EU production). Immediately after Poland with 3.8 billion liters produced (12% of total EU production), Spain (3.3 billion liters produced, 10%), the Netherlands (2.5 billion liters, 8%) , France (2.1 billion liters, 7%), the Czech Republic (1.8 billion liters, 6%) and Romania (1.7 billion liters, 5%). Compared to 2019, Slovakia recorded the largest increase in alcoholic beer production (+ 25%), followed by Greece, Lithuania and France (all + 3%).The Netherlands is the leading exporter with 1.9 billion liters of beer containing alcohol in 2020, equal to 21% of total EU beer exports (intra and extra EU).
Followed by Belgium (1.7 billion liters; 19%) and Germany (1.5 billion liters; 17%), France and the Czech Republic (both 0.5 billion liters; 6%) Ireland and Poland (both 0.4 billion liters; 5%). With 0.8 billion liters, France was the largest importer of alcoholic beer in 2020 and accounted for 16% of total EU imports (intra and extra EU).
