(ANSA-AFP) - TOKYO, AUGUST 09 - The Japanese city of Nagasaki commemorated the 76th anniversary of the launch of the US atomic bomb that razed it to the ground with a sober ceremony during which the mayor asked the global community for a new treaty for a moratorium definitive nuclear power.
"As the only country that has suffered atomic bombings during the war, it is our immutable mission to constantly advance the efforts of the international community, step by step, towards the realization of a world free from nuclear weapons", said the Japanese Prime Minister YoshihideSuga on the occasion. . However, Japan has not signed the latest agreement for the prohibition of atomic arsenals that formally entered into force last year, considering it useless and not signed by all the countries that have them. "World leaders must commit to reducing nuclear weapons and building trust through dialogue, and civil society must push them in that direction," said Nagasaki Mayor Tomihisa Taue. The bomb threw the city into an atomic hell, three days later the same fate as Hiroshima, killing 74,000 people. The survivors and a few foreign dignitaries present today at the commemoration said a silent prayer at 11.02 local time, 4.02 in Italy, the exact time when the second and last nuclear weapon used in wartime was launched. For the second consecutive year, attendance at the ceremony was reduced to a minimum due to anti-coronavirus measures. (ANSA-AFP).
