The messenger service has a new function for sending photos.

It is identified by a specific symbol.

But one important thing is missing.

Munich - The messenger service WhatsApp has come up with something new for its users.

As announced a few weeks ago, the single view for sent photos and videos is now available.

Up until now, pictures and videos were saved or could always be saved, depending on the recipient's settings.

This should change with this new function.

As the name suggests, it should now be possible to send pictures and videos in such a way that they can only be viewed once and then disappear from the recipient's smartphone.

WhatsApp wants to give users even more control over their privacy.

To use the new function, select the photo or video for the desired chat that is to be sent as a single view.

As with normal photo delivery, you can also insert a text for the recipient or add a filter.

You will now also see a “1” symbol here.

If you tap that now, the new photo function is activated and you can only view the picture or video once.

WhatsApp renews photo delivery: The function can do that - and it is missing

  • Sent media are no longer saved by the recipient.

  • Each photo or video can only be viewed once.

  • Photos or videos sent with single view cannot be forwarded, saved, starred, or shared.

  • Photos or videos sent with single view can only be viewed within 14 days.

Then they disappear from the chat.

  • The single view function must be selected each time in order to use it for files.

  • If the recipient has enabled read receipt for messages, you will be notified when a one-time view file has been opened by the recipient.

  • In the chat, a preview of the file is not shown as usual.

In addition to these advantages, the new function lacks an important addition: the recipient can take a screenshot of the photo unnoticed without the sender of the message being informed.

The same applies to videos: If the recipient takes a picture of the video sent, the sender is not notified.

Of course, a recipient can still use another smartphone to photograph or film the photo or video on the screen.

For these reasons, WhatsApp also warns its users to only send one-time view files to people whom the sender trusts.

This is how you get to WhatsApp's new photo function

In order to be able to activate the new one-time view for your photos, all you have to do is update your app. However, it may still be a few days before everyone can use the new function. The function is available for Android, iOS, KaiOS and WhatsApp for web and desktop.
