Fires: fire touches houses, people in the street in the Agrigento area

(ANSA) - CALTABELLOTTA, 12 AUG - A vast fire has developed in the past few hours in Caltabellotta (Agrigento), in the promontory that borders Via Roma, right at the entrance to the country, affecting brushwood and areas used for grazing. The flames have also touched some houses. Several people took to the streets, fearing that their houses would be engulfed in fire.

    Agents of the Forestry Corps are operating on the spot for the extinguishing interventions, waiting for the firefighters of Sciacca, currently engaged in another intervention, to reach the area affected by the flames.

    The mayor of Caltabellotta Calogero Cattano reported that at the moment the situation seems to be under control. Civil protection did not consider it necessary to have any provision for evacuation of the built-up area. The flames are moving north in the meantime. Serious environmental consequences are feared.
