A storm in a champagne flute or the beginnings of an economic-diplomatic battle between Paris and Moscow? Since the beginning of July, a bottle has not left the cellars of Reims and Épernay for Russia. Declared by the Champagne Committee, which brings together the producers and winegrowers of the appellation, this boycott is a reaction to Russian federal law 345-FZ, promulgated on July 2 by Vladimir Poutine. This requires modifying the bottles. On the main label, where the mark appears, it is still possible to keep the word “champagne” in the Roman alphabet. On the other hand, on the back label (smaller, it is stuck on the back of the bottles) written in Cyrillic, the mention “shampanskoye” is reserved for sparkling wines produced in Russia and with grapes harvested in Russia. The others must rename themselves… “sparkling wine”.
