"I will never forget the first time I hiked and did camping alone," says

Gali Almog, 42, from Kfar Saba

.

"It was the summer of 2019, and after a day of hiking in the Judean Plain, I set up the tent, lit a fire, prepared food, and tried to sleep. But I could not fall asleep, because of the loud sounds of animals roaming near my tent. "Eventually I decided I would fall asleep no matter what. At sunrise, I woke up to an unforgettable morning, a morning where I was filled with the feeling that I had broken through a barrier in front of me, that I had overcome an old fear."

Seemingly, there is nothing special about a lone hiker moving around the country, picking up a tent in the evening, waking up early in the morning and continuing on her way.

Just like a male hiker who chooses to hike alone.

Seemingly, there is nothing special about it - but in real life, such situations lead to a backlash from the environment, at best.

"When there is an opportunity - I do not think twice"

There is a lot of talk about the wonders of solo hiking, and although throughout the Far East and South America you will find quite a few Israeli women traveling solo, when talking about Israel - it seems that the matter becomes relatively rare.

When Gali is asked why she prefers to walk alone, she explains that she just wants to take every opportunity she has, to go out into nature. "I am a mother of three children, and I also work, so when there is an opportunity - I do not think twice. A few days ago, for example, I had free time in the morning and at noon. So at the height of spontaneity, I went for a few hours In general, I always prepare information about goals in advance, and when the opportunity arises - I am immediately ready. "

According to her, the trunk of a car regularly contains a tent, a sleeping bag and a blanket. "I don't need much and I don't make fancy field meals. I take bread, raw tahini and water - and set off. I don't even have a coffee set."

What is the benefit of traveling alone?

"Mostly quiet. It's just me and nature, I'm just focused on my trip and my connection to the place, to the world. After all, in everyday life, we do not have a quiet moment. There is always something to do, organize, arrange. In nature, there are no distractions. You are alone with yourself. Another advantage: I control every element of the trip. If I want to change the route as I wish, I do so. I I want to linger for a long time next to a special plant I saw - no one will speed me up. Sometimes I like to study plants closely, and not at all "It's appropriate to linger for half an hour in front of a flower and check which insects are coming at it," she laughs.

Are there concerns about meeting people whose intentions are not always good?

"I have no fear of people, and the fear I had in the past of animals at night has already passed. Besides, I walk in the middle of the week, so there are not many people in the field. If anything, I am afraid of snake bites or injuries as a result of a fall, for example."

Were there times when you felt threatened?

"There was only one time. I was hiking in the Negev, and suddenly a man approached me, who looked like a scary guy. I did not know exactly what he wanted from me. He just unpleasantly told me to turn around and not continue on my route. And that's what I did. I'm not looking for trouble. ".

And how do other hikers react to an encounter with a lone hiker?

"People are very friendly. A lot of hikers I meet on the way invite me for coffee or meals in the field. They always ask how I'm doing. My parents have a harder time traveling alone. I really hope they don't read this article, because I promised them I would not do it again. ... ".

Do you have a tip for travelers who want to start and travel alone in the country?

"In my opinion, especially before the first trips, you need to prepare well and in depth, both in terms of choosing and studying the route and in terms of equipment. You should also read about the place itself and potential dangers, and especially talk to people who have already done the route. Stay overnight near the tents of other travelers, to get security. "

Amit on the Israel Trail: "I even hung up on the phone"

Amit Avigdor (24) from Kiryat Motzkin

, completed in May a continuous trip for Israel - from Eilat to Dan, including an ascent to Mount Hermon (which is currently not on the trail).

The whole journey lasted about two months and a week, when she started it with girlfriends and friends, and slowly found herself drawn to solo walking, including field nights without a tent.

Just a mattress, a blanket - and a carpet of stars over your head.

"My goal was to enjoy the road and soak up the atmosphere, culture, encounters with people, especially in the Arava area - which I do not know enough. For this reason, I made sure to pass right inside the communities."

According to her, the physical difficulty was not a factor, due to her military past as a fighter and as an athlete.

The matter of solo did not cause her any worries either.

"I was not too scared. I knew things would work out," she says.

What attracts you to travel alone?

"I did not do the whole Israel Trail alone. Here and there I met people, walked with them, and moved on alone. Everything was very dynamic, so I experienced both worlds - alone and together. I like to travel with friends, but the big advantage of hiking alone is the ability "Discover yourself and absorb the most of the environment. I see it as a process of self-improvement, until I even hung up on the phone, to be completely alone."

Slowly she found herself drawn to a solo march.

How was the first night alone in the field?

"There were some concerns, but I didn't think too much. I just put down the mattress, cooked myself rice, ate and fell asleep."

Did the parents express concern?

"It's funny. I'm after the big trip in both the United States and the East, and my parents said they care more about the trip for Israel than the trips I did abroad."

Was there a memorable moment on your trip?

"The end of the trip was definitely unforgettable.

I climbed Mount Hermon, which is not on the Israel Trail.

At the end, upstairs, after the hard ascent, I started crying with excitement.

At that moment I realized what a journey I had made. "

Did you meet other solo hikers for Israel?

" Hardly.

It pained me to realize that there are not enough girls traveling for Israel - both alone and in a group.

It itched me, and I wish there were more women on the trail.

It is an amazing journey that is very empowering. "

Song: The desert is home

Shir Perlmutter (32), a guide from Arad

, spends a considerable amount of time outside - whether on trips or overnight stays, alone. In fact, only in the last year, she estimates that she spent about a third of the nights outdoors, throughout the Judean Desert and around Arad.

"It all started with a question a guide asked me on a trip. She asked 'what is a house for you?' I suddenly realized that for me, a house is not a bed and four walls, but other things. At that moment, I asked myself if I could live with myself. Of 'a man within himself is living' ".

And so, about a year and a half ago. She left her apartment in Arad, and began to spend the night in the Judean Desert near Arad, in the places closest to the hikes she guides in the morning. "My starting point was that I don't have a lot of rules, but it's important to me that I have a chance to fall in love with myself really and not superficially."

When she is not Lena in the field, she uses her parents' house, and sometimes other friends and family.

According to her, the feeling of relaxation she experienced during the overnight stays occurred very quickly.

"I'm not about going out and calling on everyone to go for a walk alone. Indeed, it's important to me to convey the message that 'we are our own home.' I am, so I feel comfortable wherever I am. "

What attracts you the most on a solo trip?

"A trip alone is an amazing thing. It's the ability to see things I would not see with other people. Right now I was back from a few days trip with friends. On this trip, they kept talking about the trips they made in the past and the trips they plan in the future, without being present on the trip itself. "When I travel alone, it would not happen to me."

When asked if she gets bored on the long nights in the desert, she immediately makes it clear that boredom is irrelevant. "I do not get bored at all. I choose a place, usually without people around at all, put on a mattress and a blanket and light a fire. I fight myself not to open Facebook and scroll, and prefer to just think in front of the burning fire, process thoughts about things that happened to me during the day, read a book "And in general, there is not too much time to get bored. The evening feeling is very short outside - you go to bed very early and wake up very early."

Are there fears that attack you when you are alone in the field?

"I'm scared of snakes and cats. Really. But it happened once I got to a night camp in the area of Birkat Tzafira in Nahal Tselim. I was there all alone. I knew it was an axis where Shevachs pass, so I almost moved somewhere else.

But in the end I decided to stay, and do exactly what I wanted to do: drink coffee and read a book. "

Listen, you're really living outside. It's something most people would not dare to do. outside.

I work outside and I also sleep outside, but I do not really live outside because I am close to the comfort of Arad.

I have more to aspire to. "
