(ANSA) - ROME, AUGUST 13 - Thailand estimates that the daily coronavirus cases in the country could double by the beginning of September to 45,000 a day, despite the measures in place to contain the pandemic. The Guardian reports it.

The country, which in the last 24 hours has recorded a record of 23,418 new infections and 184 deaths, is struggling with its worst outbreak since the beginning of the pandemic.

The restrictive measures have not yet had the desired effect, anti-Covid task force spokesperson Taweesin Wisanuyothin said, warning that infections could increase significantly in the coming weeks.

"The blockade has been 20% effective, but infections continue to rise, expected to reach around 45,000 cases per day by early or mid-September," he explained. Since the start of the pandemic, Thailand has recorded a total of 863,189 cases, including 7,126 deaths. (HANDLE).
