In Greece, however, the flames continued to rage.

On Evia, the country's second largest island, several villages were surrounded by fires, and the northern part was almost completely cut off from the rest of the island by the countless large fires.

Thousands had to leave the island and be brought to safety.

Residents and volunteers fought against the flames with all possible means to defend their belongings and to support the overwhelmed fire-fighting teams.

A woman stands in front of her hut in the Nuevo Queja settlement in Guatemala.

The village of Queja was devastated by Hurricane Eta last November, killing 58 residents in a landslide.

The place was then declared uninhabitable by the government, but the people were not relocated.

The approximately thousand surviving residents then built new huts in the immediate vicinity of the old village and have lived there ever since.

Since then, several organizations from abroad have tried to improve people's lives with little success and / or a strange-seeming intention.

The mirrors hanging in each hut were donated by USAID - to give the residents more self-confidence.
