According to the manufacturer, other batches are not at risk.

Consumer protection organizations such as Foodwatch have been warning EU-wide against the contamination of numerous products with ethylene oxide for weeks.

As a precaution, France is therefore recalling masses of articles from the supermarkets, while Germany has so far been comparatively inactive.

Ethylene oxide in red grits: This is how affected consumers proceed

As early as June, food inspectors in Spain had found ethylene oxide contamination in locust bean gum and sounded the alarm. Because locust bean gum is used in food production as a thickener (E410) and is found in numerous products such as jams, meat products or ice cream. France is therefore recalling masses of items, including sweet biscuits, burgers, cereals, cheeses, dietary supplements, sweets and chocolates, desserts and spices. The manufacturer Mars recently withdrew various types of ice cream from the market in Germany. Consumer advocates such as Foodwatch have long been calling for retailers to recall all potentially affected products as a precautionary measure. So far, however, many manufacturers have assuredthat no ethylene oxide could be detected in the end products.

At the manufacturer Kühne, however, Foodwatch's fears have come true.

After it became known that locust bean gum was potentially contaminated with ethylene oxide, extensive in-house inspections of all raw and finished goods were immediately carried out, according to the manufacturer's statement on Thursday.

The analyzes showed that not only in the delivered batch of locust bean gum, but also in the end product, red groats, there was a "low level of exposure to ethylene oxide", continued Kühne.

Product safety is therefore not guaranteed.
