Hawaii is having a hard time navigating the new situation and one of the mayors has even urged the airlines to help the state by reducing the number of inbound flights. "We're just asking for a slight respite," Maui Victorino, Maui's mayor, explained at a news conference. "We do not have the authority to say 'stop,' but we are asking the forces to help us."
In the beach-rich Maui, which attracts about 300,000 tourists every month, the number of visitors even exceeded the pre-plague days. In the first three days of the summer season, it had over 35,000 tourists daily, so the airlines have no real reason to comply with the mayor's demand.
Maui residents have recently had to deal with a water shortage that has led to $ 500 fines for any non-essential action, such as washing cars, watering grass and more. They also complained on social media about the congestion created by tourists and begged: "Stop coming to us."
Apart from congestion, there is concern about the spread of the Delta strain, which has already caused some businesses to reduce occupancy by 50 percent.
