The third Covid vaccination is "very likely necessary" - says Professor Franz-Xaver Reichl.
He also considers an annual booster vaccination to be realistic.
New study results suggest: The protective effect of the corona vaccination does not last for years. The vaccine manufacturers Pfizer and Biontech assume a decline in the protective effect of the joint corona rate after six months, as the Ärzteblatt informs. In a communication from the biotechnology company Biontech it is said: "As already clear from the practical application data collected by the Israeli Ministry of Health
, the protective effect of the vaccine against infections and symptomatic diseases decreases six months after the second vaccination
". Based on the data available so far, it is likely "that a third dose will be required within six to twelve months after the full vaccination," it said.
Virus expert Professor Dr.
Dr.
Franz-Xaver Reichl from the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich warns of this problem in an interview with the Ippen central editorial office: "Israeli studies say that after the second vaccination, immune protection lasts for about six months to a maximum of twelve months," says microbiologist Reichl .
In order to refresh the dwindling vaccination protection, a booster vaccination would be necessary.

Booster vaccination: booster vaccination every year?
In order to maintain the protective effect of an mRNA corona vaccination from Biontech / Pfizer or Moderna, according to Reichl, one dose of the vaccine is sufficient for a booster. In the case of single vaccinations, as in the case of the Johnson & Johnson preparation, research is still being carried out into whether and when a second vaccination is necessary.
But how long does a booster vaccination actually last?
"Biontech has carried out the first investigations on this," says toxicologist Reichl. The company is currently testing the effects of the third vaccination on volunteers: “How long the protection lasts after the third vaccination is still completely unknown. But it is assumed that it will then go back about half a year to a year. In the end, it will likely lead to a booster vaccination every year, similar to an influenza vaccination ”.
With regard to corona mutations, booster vaccinations will also play a major role in the future, according to the assumption of many medical professionals.
According to Reichl, the mRNA vaccines are still relatively effective against the currently most contagious Delta variant.
The vaccination protection here is over 90 percent
.
“But the mRNA vaccines are already being developed for variants that can be more effective.
The mRNA vaccines can be adapted relatively quickly ”.
