During a car control in the village of Stains near Paris, police officers apparently shot a driver and his companion and seriously injured them.
Because the driver did not follow an order, officials wanted to check the car around 1.30 a.m. on Monday night, said the Paris police prefecture on Twitter.
She was referring to a video on social media alleged to show the incident in the suburbs of Paris.
The authenticity of the video has not been confirmed.
A police spokeswoman commented in detail on the alleged course of events.
The driver rammed a police officer backwards with the car.
Then he drove forward and dragged a second officer who wanted to stop the car several meters, said the police spokeswoman.
Both officers then made use of their service weapons.
As the newspaper "Le Parisien" reported, the driver was hit by five bullets and his passenger was hit by one.
Both were taken to a hospital.
Investigations, including those against the police officers who were also injured, had been initiated.
Targeted shot into the interior of the car
It is still unclear why the driver and his companion wanted to evade the control.
On the video, which allegedly shows how the two are being checked, a total of three plainclothes officers can be seen working around the car.
According to media reports, they are said to be members of the local BAC, the French anti-crime brigade that is part of the police.
During the operation in the Seine-Saint-Denis department, one of the police officers apparently shot a targeted fire in the interior of the car after the car had already stopped.
