"A few thousand kilometers from here, a historic turning point is at work".
After 20 years of war and a return of the Taliban to the head of Afghanistan, Emmanuel Macron spoke this evening on the situation in the country.
A situation which if it is "far from our borders" will have "major consequences for Europe and for France" according to the President of the Republic.
In his speech, Emmanuel Macron recalled the legitimacy of the French military intervention decided by Jacques Chirac: "Our country has been in Afghanistan for 13 years (...) with a clear objective, to fight a terrorist threat which was aimed directly at our territory and that of our allies ”reminded the Head of State.
Before paying tribute to the troops who "passed through the Afghan valleys" and to the 90 men who paid the price for blood in battles with the insurgents.
"This fight was our honor and I ask you to remember it" hammered the president.
Measures against the terrorist threat
To face "the terrorist groups present in Afghanistan" which will "seek to profit from the destabilization" of the country, Emmanuel Macron wants "to take initiatives (...) against Islamist terrorism".
France will take common measures before Great Britain in the coming hours.
Concerning the Afghans who seek to flee Afghanistan and who would like to come to Europe to escape the new regime, the Head of State assured that France will take "all its part" in the reception of refugees but that "The Europe alone will not be able to assume the consequences of the current situation ”.
The President of the Republic intends to "protect us from significant migratory flows (...) we will therefore respond to irregular flows".
