Do people in certain professions have shorter lives?

A study seems to prove that there could be something to this assumption.

According to a previously unpublished study by the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW),

workers

should

die on average four years earlier than civil servants

.

The news magazine

Spiegel

reports on it

.

Workers: Men live five years shorter than civil servants, women three years

The differences are particularly striking among men: According to the study, 65-year-old

civil servants can

still

expect

a

life expectancy of another 21.5 years

.

Employees and self-employed of the same age only wait 19 years before their death, workers can only hope for an additional 15.9 years of life.

That's more than five years, civil servants live longer.

According to the study, there are also significant differences in life expectancy among women: women workers die three years earlier than civil servants.

Finally, the results of the study suggest that the differences in life expectancy are related to social status.

Lifetime income inequality is compounded by differences in life expectancy.

The DIW considers the possibility of

defining

the

retirement age for different occupations

or of introducing a real minimum pension to be too complicated, according to the Spiegel report.

VdK President Verena Bentele rejects a general increase in the standard retirement age: too few people manage to work full-time until the age of 65 (let alone 67).

According to the report, she advocates

improvements to the disability pension

.

About the study

The study was carried out on behalf of the social association VdK.

The data for this come from the household survey of the Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP), which was compared with official mortality tables.
