Dragonflies not only look beautiful in the garden, they also protect us from mosquito pests.
You can find out how to attract insects to your garden here.
Munich - Dragonflies glide along the shores of lakes and ponds in their multitude of colors.
But you can also create a home for these wonderful creatures in the garden and attract them.
If you do everything right, they will also take care of the annoying mosquitoes and aphids.
Dragonflies in the garden: how to attract them to your garden
Basically, some of the native dragonfly species are not very demanding when it comes to their homes.
These can be found on lakes, ponds, marshland and simple ponds.
But there are also a variety of rarer species that specialize in certain environments.
In order to attract as many dragonflies as possible, you should create a very varied wetland environment for them.

Some dragonfly species need the following habitats, among others:
tiny spring rivulets
clean, sandy streams
shallow clay puddles
Peat bog ditches
Ponds with a clear surface with little vegetation and a muddy bottom
fish-free, but plant-rich ponds that are not in the shade
sandy and flat shore areas
swampy areas
Pool with standing water
Dragonflies in the garden: creating protection and hunting grounds
A real dragonfly paradise can be created by creating a pond with different areas of the above mentioned habitats.
By leaving out fish, you allow the larvae to grow up with a little less danger.
You can't keep the predators off their necks entirely, since frogs, bats * or birds are not averse to a small dragonfly larva snack either.
But if the wetland has a muddy bottom, the larvae can hide from these enemies.
At the edge of the dragonfly biotope, stalks should grow from which the dragonflies can start their hunting flights. For example: Ornamental grasses, horsetail *, meadowsweet *, garden bamboo, cattails, ferns or irises. Furthermore, heaps of stones in the sunny areas of the biotope are recommended. Because wherever there are dragonflies, the mosquito and aphid population is naturally reduced. It is therefore worth creating ponds and swamp beds *, especially in natural gardens and permaculture. There also frogs and newts find the urgently needed habitat, as kraut & beet reports.
