Solar and wind battery: The top models to complete your installation

If you have a solar panel or wind turbine in your home, having a battery to store energy can be helpful. Here is d

Renewable energies not only have a big positive impact on the environment, but, as an added bonus, it can save you big money over time. Of course, installing solar panels on the roof of your house, or even a wind turbine in your garden, this represents a significant basic investment. But amortization is ensured in the years that follow, in particular if you complete your installation with a solar or wind storage battery. The latter allows you to accumulate the energy harvested by your photovoltaic panels or your wind turbine, to use it when your system is not operating at full capacity. You save more electricity, to the delight of your wallet. If you are not sure which battery model to choose and are hesitating between a wind turbine lithium battery, solar gel battery or other type of battery, our buying guide can help you make your choice.

our selection

  • Battery 50 Ah 12V, EcoWatt

  • Victron 8 Ah 12V battery, AGM

  • Battery 200 Ah 12V, Utracell

  • Numax Premium 18 Ah 12V battery, AGM

  • Victron battery 60 Ah 12V, AGM

  • How to choose your wind turbine battery?

If you have installed a wind turbine in your garden or on your roof, supplementing it with a stationary battery is a good choice to achieve even more savings. But you still have to take the time to choose the right battery for your needs. It is also necessary to have the other suitable devices to use it correctly, in particular a charge regulator, intended to bridge the gap between your wind turbine and your battery, by protecting the latter from a too high or insufficient charge. It is a purchase that is simply essential to ensure the stability and efficiency of your installation. Note also that in the case of wind power, the gel battery is not recommended. So choose an AGM model for your installation.

As for the battery itself, you must choose one whose capacity will be sufficient to cover your needs as much as possible during times when the wind turbine is not working. To size your battery, you must therefore add up the consumption of your devices on a daily basis. It is necessary to calculate what your refrigerator consumes over 24 hours, your TV or your computer on average during the day, or even to make an estimate on the lighting side as well. If, for example, you arrive at a daily consumption of 800 Watts, then you have to divide 800 Watts by 12 Volts to get the Amps you need each day, in our case 67 Amps per day. Note, moreover, that it is better not to discharge a battery beyond 50% of its capacity, therefore, opt instead for a battery with a capacity of about 133 Amps for our example. You can even increase the chosen capacity a little more, since a wind turbine is not always certain to operate on a daily basis.

How to choose your solar battery?

The way to choose the capacity of a solar battery stems from the same thinking as for the wind battery: it all depends on your daily consumption and you have to perform the same calculation. To accompany a photovoltaic installation, you can, unlike wind power, opt for a gel battery if you wish, even if a lead model (AGM) is also suitable. The batteries presented very concretely as intended for solar have the advantage of being more durable than the models which are intended for vehicles, even if it is possible to adapt them if necessary. Note that, in terms of lifespan, it is more interesting to take a gel solar battery, because it is more durable and easier to maintain than an AGM battery. However, battery manufacturers in this second category are competing for progress in reducing the gap between the two types of batteries. In any case, invest, again, in a charge regulator, and choose a waterproof reference, which benefits from the longest possible warranty period. You put all the chances on your side to achieve solid energy savings, and therefore money, over many years, while having reliable equipment that does not require continuous maintenance to operate efficiently. What to live your daily life serenely.which benefits from the longest possible warranty period.
