(ANSA) - NEW YORK, AUGUST 17 - First frames of the new season of "The Crown", the award-winning series by Peter Morgan for Netflix that has come to the passing of the baton of its main protagonists.
The streaming giant released today portraits of Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana and DominicWest as Prince Charles. Filming for the fifth season began in July. Diana and Carlo are at the center of the new episodes that follow the tormented relationship in the nineties, from the separation in 1992 to the divorce four years later.
Debicki, who most recently starred in Christopher Nolan's "Tenet," inherited the part from Emma Corrin, West from Josh O'Connor. In the fifth season they will be joined by Imelda Staunton (of "Harry Potter") in the role of Queen Elizabeth, Jonathan Pryce ("The Two Popes") in that of Prince Philip, Lesley Manville in the part of Margaret and Jonny LeeMiller in that of Prime Minister Tory John Major .
"The Crown" debuted on Netflix in 2016 and each season changes the lead actors to reflect more realistically their age. The fifth season will address the saga of the royal family starting from the so-called "annushorribilis" of Elizabeth: in 1992 the queen saw the separation of three of the four children, the public indiscretions on the relationship between Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles, the intopless photos of Sarah Ferguson, the wife of the Prince Andrew, and the Windsor Castle fire. It is not clear, however, whether the season will come to Diana's death in 1997 or whether, due to the tragic accident in the Pont de l'Alma tunnel in Paris, it will be necessary to wait for the sixth and presumably last season of the series.
