(ANSA-AFP) - KERBALA, AUGUST 19 - Islam celebrates the Ashura festival today.
In Iraq, several hundreds of thousands of pilgrims have reached the holy city of Kerbala from all over the country, but also from Iran and Pakistan, with no particular measures against Covid-19, or masks.
The festival of Ashura, which before the pandemic brought together millions of people, recalls the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, who were killed in the Kerbala desert in 680 by the troops of the Umayyad Yazid caliph.
Iraq, a country of 40 million inhabitants, currently records about 10 thousand cases of Covid a day and almost 20 thousand deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.
Only 5% of Iraqis have been fully vaccinated.
