The African Lily, also called Agapanthus, attracts many looks.

Don't miss the right time to bring them into your home.

Munich - Decorative lilies are real eye-catchers in the garden.

They bloom mostly in a delicate light blue until around mid-August and fascinate garden fans and guests alike.

They are, so to speak, the

hyacinths

of late summer

.

But at some point, with the best care, the flowering of the African Lily is unfortunately over, then the plant should be prepared for winter.

Maintaining and hibernating ornamental lilies: this is how you should proceed

Ornamental lilies belong to the ornamental lily plants and the

amaryllis family

* and are therefore also poisonous for many animals.

But if you plant the pretty plants out of the reach of children and pets, you will have a lot of friends with them, especially in summer.

Caring for and hibernating ornamental lilies: the right care

African lilies (Agapanthus)

usually bloom from July and into August

.

In the middle of August, the flowering is slowly over.

The fascination for the pretty plants is by no means new, they were already part of baroque gardens.

The plants originally come from South Africa and mostly bloom light blue, but also white or dark blue.

Decorative lilies enjoy the following care:

  • Location: Partly shady to full sun and sheltered from the wind;

they are also wonderfully suitable as container plants.

  • Soil: rich in nutrients, can be enriched with expanded clay *, loam or sand.

Container plants generally need good drainage.

  • Care: Decorative lilies are easy to care for and only need some sun protection and regular water on hot summer days.

You can cut out withered flowers.

  • Fertilizer: In the bed is only fertilized in spring, in the pot regularly during the growing season.

  • Avoid waterlogging at all costs, but decorative lilies tolerate drought well for a short time.

  • After the ice saints, buckets with ornamental lilies are allowed outside again or the plants are moved into the bed.

Caring for and hibernating ornamental lilies: this is how wintering works

Unfortunately, most of the ornamental lilies are not winter hardy, so they have to move to new quarters before the first frost.

Container plants can move indoors together with their container.

How to overwinter ornamental lilies:

  • The plants should definitely be moved inside before the first frost

  • Winter quarters: It should be cool, the temperature should be below ten degrees Celsius.

If the plant is overwintered in light, it will flower earlier than if it is overwintered in a dark room.

In general, it is advisable to overwinter evergreen specimens in a bright light.

  • Quarters: Cold winter gardens, a garden shed, a greenhouse in which there is no frost or, if necessary, the cellar are suitable for this.

  • Care: The earth should never dry out completely, but under no circumstances should root rot occur.

In most cases, however, watering is sufficient every month or less.

Fertilization is only used until autumn.

Dead leaves are generally torn off, not cut off.

  • From March onwards, the plants are allowed to go outside again, as long as the temperatures no longer drop below minus five degrees Celsius.

But then the ball of the pot needs protection until it is warm enough.

Nothing stands in the way of the African Lily's successful wintering

.

The plants will give pleasure for years and should only get a new pot when they clearly outgrow the old one.

In the next spring, depending on the type of wintering, the African lily will soon show flowers again.
