The victim was injured in the upper body, face and internal airways: A 66-year-old was set on fire at a bus stop in downtown Oldenburg.

The man was in mortal danger after the attack on Schlossplatz, said the police in the Lower Saxony city.

After the fire attack, the police are investigating attempted murder.

A 53-year-old is said to have hit and kicked the man in an argument and then poured a flammable liquid over him and set it on fire with a lighter.

The alleged perpetrator from Wiefelstede in the Ammerland district was caught by police at the scene.

Mann had spoken to mother and daughter

The suspect was taken to a psychiatric hospital after consulting a doctor and a city worker.

According to the police, the man first spoke to a 34-year-old woman who was waiting with her daughter at the bus stop.

The later victim then stepped in.

Passers-by came to the aid of the seriously injured man, put out the fire and alerted the police and the emergency services.

The 66-year-old was taken to a hospital.

The police and the public prosecutor's office have not yet provided any further information on the possible background to the crime.

The investigation continues.
