It is a shocking video, the one released in these hours on social networks, which shows Haji Mullah Achakzai, the police chief of the Afghan province of Badghis, near Herat, brutally executed by the Taliban.
The police chief was killed on Wednesday.
Afghan security adviser Nasser Waziri, who knew Achakzai personally, confirmed the authenticity of the video to Newsweek, explaining that Islamists shared it through a network linked to the Taliban.
The images were also verified by other police officers and government officials, according to Waziri.
The insurgents were on the hunt for Achakzai, who has long fought the Taliban. "He was surrounded and had no choice but to surrender last night," Waziri explained yesterday. "The Taliban targeted Achakzai because he was a senior intelligence official."
